Dateline: Running Cedar

The Reds were on the road against the Cards and jumped on the starter with a long triple by Nick. Matt hit a sharp RBI single to score the run and Reds fans cheered the quick 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, Ben gave up a couple of walks and a couple of singles and then two misplayed grounders resulted in some runs. After one the Cards led 4-1.

Reds bats were quiet for the remainder of the game and the Reds bullpen just had trouble throwing strikes for a couple of innings. Garrett game on and Devon came in for his first mound appearance of the year. Unfortunately, the Cards scored four in the second and three more in the third before Ian came in and quickly struck out two to end the inning. After three the Cards had a commanding 11-1 lead.

Again the Reds bats were quiet in the fourth, but Ian did a great job on the mound and shut down the Cards on only a few pitches. The Reds went down quietly again in the fifth. Mason came on in the fifth and, after some initial control problems, settled down and struck out the last batter. Unfortunately, two more runs scored. There was not time for a sixth so the Cards came away with a commanding 13-1 victory.

Coach Grossman said, “These were two tough games. We’ll have some fun at practice tomorrow and it wouldn’t surprise me if we win over the Pirates by three runs.” Coach Goldstein said “We’ll get better – I’m looking forward to practice tomorrow”. This reporter did not press the coaches for more interview time as they were extremely busy preparing for the Pirates game this Thursday.
