OK a new thing happened.  Over 25 years of coaching youth baseball and it’s really something when new things happen.

I’m at practice and a player is throwing his glove up in the air. Alas, he was close to the dugout and the glove fell on the roof.

Yes it did.

He said, “wow that was a really stupid thing to do”

I said, “I haven’t had that happen before. You should be congratulated for doing a NEW thing for ME.   I also said, “don’t beat yourself up, I know you didn’t have any evil intent.”

I am not sure I would have said those things 25 years ago.  I really shudder at what I would have said if it was one of my own kids that did it.

So I guess the moral is — take a deep breath and all will mostly be well.

All the players wanted to fix it right away and I said, “I have a practice plan, let’s stick to that and do it after practice.  I have spare kids gloves (I always bring one or two in case someone forgets one or whatever) and we’ll figure it out later.”

That was a GREAT call as after practice it took a good while for us to figure out a way to get it down.   I’ll spare the reader the ugly details, but we got it done.
