Well who’s counting, but we just had the season ending party for my team. They finished below .500 but I thought they had a great season.
The best part of the party was when I asked who was going to play again next season and everyone raised their hand (OK one or two said they weren’t sure, but their parents looked at me like — yeah he’s gonna play again).
It’s really the best part of coaching — generating enough improvement that they want to keep playing. In our world of video games and kids never getting outside, it’s really nice to make it so a dozen kids want to keep learning, playing and being outside. I think the life lessons on resilience in baseball are hard to find elsewhere and on top of all this — it’s just fun to coach. Time always stands still for me when I’m coaching in the sense that when practice is over it’s like the time just flew by. I always think that’s a sign that you like what you’re doing.
If any of this sounds like your dugout, come join the newsletter — good stuff for coaches who just love the game.
