I worked with pitchers today and ran a drill that I blogged about a week ago — it’s fun as the player has to have a strong glove hand. The player receives a ball in the glove hand – the coach hands them another ball at a nice extension position and the pitcher throws. We did this today with 3 pitchers each doing two throws and repeated about 20 times — so they had a break between reps and the last few reps we asked them to throw an offspeed pitch. When it was done we asked them to throw one ball without the steps and just see if they had internalized the steps.

They had and one kid looked at me said “Wow, I think I can pitch now.”

Goodness, I hadn’t expected that, but the drill works but the keys weren’t just the drill. We had to run it at a fast pace and we had to keep everyone focused. It’s not an easy drill to run but I like it and I also liked the part where I said — ok let’s see if you internalized anything from the drill — meaning I want to see the impact — I do not want you to revert to some of the bad mechanics I had seen. They did it and it was a great practice. Had to share…
