Well at long last I have been offered an assistant coaching job on a 13U team. We will see how it goes. The transition to older kids, the big field. After a couple of practices it feels like the same. I’m lucky that I worked with several of the players for the last two years so that makes it easy.

For those coaching on the big field, I got out my soft hands gloves and had them use them on ground balls and it was amazing how many problems there were on “catching ground balls.” Turns out clean fielding on a small field doesn’t translate immediately on the big field. You are just farther away and players have to make the adjustment.

So far, all the coaching aspects seem about the same with the addition of having to work pickoffs, pitchouts and the balk rule. So stay tuned.

If any of this sounds familiar, hop on my newsletter — I share what I’m learning out there every step of the way.
