Dateline: Hook Road 1

On an extremely pleasant afternoon at Hook road, the Brewers played their second game against the O’s. Unfortunately, Mitchell, Olivia, Caelen and Nicholas were unable to attend, leaving the Brewers with only seven starters. Coach Grossman in his pre-game interview said, “Well, whenever you have a bunch of great players missing it makes it tough, but this is when you really find out how strong your team really is. I think we are going to do just fine as we had some excellent practices this week. “

His thoughts were right on track as the the Brewers got a quick four runs in the top of the first. Colin grounded out on a hard hit ball to the mound. Isaac, Jordan (after hanging tough and fouling off several pitches), and Matthew singled. Michael picked up an RBI with a single to third to score Isaac. Sofia singled to short to score Jordan. Amanda singled to score Matthew and Colin singled to score Sofia. The O’s scored four in their half of the first with no outs made by the Brewers in the field.

In the second, Isaac grounded out to first for the second leadoff out of the game. Jordan singled to the mound. Matthew drilled a long shot to center for a single. Michael singled to third to load the bases. Sofia singled to score Jordan. Amanda singled back to the mound to score Matthew. Colin singled to score Michael. Isaac grounded back to the mound for an out but Sofia scored on the play for an RBI for Isaac. The official scorer didn’t notice that the Brewers had four runs so Jordan went ahead and hit a hard shot to right to score Amanda. Bottom of the second and the O’s scored four in their half of the second with again no outs made by the Brewers in the field — but there were some pretty close plays.

Top of the third and back to business for the Brewers offense. Matthew led off with a single. Michael singled. Sofia singled to load the bases. Amanda grounded to the mound but they made a nice play to get Matthew at home for out one. Colin singled to score Michael. Isaac singled to score Sofia. Jordan hit a nice line drive, but unfortunately the pitcher caught it for out two — all the other runners got back safely. Matthew grounded out to end the inning.

Bottom of the third inning. the Brewers worked their magic. The first batter grounded back to Michael who made a great play, set his feet and tossed to Colin for out one. The same thing happened for out two. Now the pressure was on, would the Brewers get their first three-up three-down inning of the year. The next batter hit a hard grounder to Amanda. She stopped it, remained calm, picked it up and fired to Colin at first for out three. No run, no hit, no errors for the Brewers in the top of the third! Brewers fans celebrated.

Top of the fourth and the Brewers picked up some more runs. Michael singled, Sofia singled and Amanda singled to put bases loaded on with no outs. Colin hit a hard grounder to first for an RBI to score Michael. Isaac singled but since there was no force Amanda held up at third and the bases were loaded. Jordan hit a hard smash to second that the fielder made a nice play and fired to first to get Jordan by a step but Amanda scored on the play. With Isaac at second and Sofia at third, we had some drama next. Two outs. Matthew hit a hard shot to left. The Orioles decided to try to get Isaac at third. They got him by a step but this reporter is positive that the alert runner Sofia scored before Isaac was tagged out at third. Since there was no force on the play, the run would count (if we were keeping score). In the bottom of the fourth, the Orioles again scored four runs on no out in the field.

Coach Grossman said, “Well these Orioles are tough and we missed some of our big offensive bats and great defensive fielders today. Our defense wasn’t as good as last week, but it was exciting to get that three up three down inning. The rest of our team played tough and I was proud of the seven we have as they played hard the whole game. We still need to work on being ready for every pitch, but I am still very pleased with our progress. “
