In a hot day at Hook Road the 10-3 White Sox hosted the O’s in the first round of the Reston AA tournament. The Sox came in flying high after a first place finish and a two game winning streak. David Wynne started on the mound and shut down the O’s in the first – but in a rare happenstance, the Sox bats were quiet in the first. In the second, the O’s eeked out four runs on some cheap walks to jump to a 4-0 lead. Again, the Sox bats were rather quiet but some sharp base running by Ricky put the Sox on the board. Wesley came on in the third and held the O’s at bay with a nice play at home where Nolan flipped to Wesley for an exciting out at the plate. However, the O’s did eek a a couple runs across to give themselves a 6-1 lead.

The Sox battled back, Bretton came on and completely finished off the O’s. The Sox scored four in the fourth, led by a two run smash to left by Wesley and as they headed to the fifth it was 6-5 O’s. Bretton shut down the O’s again and the Sox came up in the bottom of the fifth. After a couple of outs, the Sox were still not done. Christopher smashed a big single to the infield and the Sox had a chance. However, it was not to be and the Sox were retired. Since, the time limit had been exceeded, the O’s rejoiced and won 6-5.

Coach Goldstein said “What a great season — this was just one of those days”. Coach Grossman was a little pressed for time as he had to begin preparations for the team picnic but we caught him briefly as he said “Well…its certainly disappointing, but I am proud of how our guys battled back and no one gave up until the final out. I thought we had a chance up to the very last out. Remember, the great thing about baseball is — there is always next year……”

This reporter would like to thank all the parents and players for all of their hard work this season — best of luck to EVERYONE in the future!!!
